Martin Varsavsky on How U.S. Tech Firms Differ from Their European Counterparts

Martin Varsavsky's fans see him as a rebel who has often disrupted the telecommunications industry. An Argentine/Spanish entrepreneur who has launched seven companies in the past 20 years, Varsavsky's current venture is FON, which he describes as a "community-empowered company dedicated to building the world's largest global WiFi network." He has a few partners helping him get there -- Skype, eBay and Google. In a podcast interview with Kevin Werbach, a professor of legal studies and ethics at Wharton, Varsavsky discusses how he invented the "call back" (a cheap way of making international phone calls), the differences between American and European technology companies, and several other issues. Varsavsky will speak at the Supernova conference that will be held in San Francisco on June 20-22.

Google ha vuelto a batir records con sus beneficios. ¿Le sorprende a alguien? Entre Febrero y Marzo Google ha incrementados sus beneficios en un 70%. De este modo su beneficio sobrepasa los 3 dólares por acción, bastante lejos de los 2 del año pasado. Sus acciones de momento superan los 450 dólares por acción y no parece que nadie esté muy interesado en venderlas Google está viviendo ahora su momento dorado, sigue con la imagen de "don't be evil", sus acciones están por encima de lo imaginable y de momento su beneficio aumentan más de lo que nos podamos imaginar. Tiene buena imagen a la hora de conseguir al mejor capital humano, con las repercusiones que eso tiene para la empresa. Es el mejor lugar para trabajar según al revista Fortune. Ha adquirido el gigante de la publicidad DoubleClick y uno de los negocios más prometedores (Youtube). ¿Alguien da más?

¿Le irán algún día las cosas mal a Google? No lo sabemos, de momento se ha convertido en la estrella más brillante del firmamento Internet. ¿Está sobre valorado? Puede, pero es difícil determinar. Al menos obtiene beneficios, no como otros negocios de la burbuja de las puntocom.

Ahora los cerdos se convertirán en una gran fuente de poder. Apareció una posible solución para la crisis energética mundial: diesel hecho a base de grasa de cerdo. La empresa petrolera estadounidense ConnocoPhillips y la mayor productora mundial de carne, Tyson Foods, anunciaron que producirán diesel de la grasa de ese animal. Asimismo afirmaron que se usarán partes de vaca y gallina para transformarlas en combustible. Las compañías sostienen que esta fuente de energía renovable será más limpia que el diesel convencional, y que esperan que esté disponible en las estaciones de servicio gasolina para fin de año. "Es el equivalente químico al diesel", dijo Geoff Webster, de Tyson Foods, en una entrevista con el Servicio Mundial de la BBC. "Tiene niveles más bajos de dióxido de carbono y no contiene azufre, que son dos beneficios muy positivos para el medio ambiente". Tyson Foods proveerá la grasa pre-procesada, ingrediente de desecho que usualmente se usa en la elaboración de jabones, cosméticos y comida para mascotas.
