El enorme auge de obras acerca de las emociones, incluyendo las del Dr. Goleman, se explica en parte porque los noventa fueron declarados, por el entonces presidente de Estados Unidos, George Bush (padre), como la Década del Cerebro para impulsar la investigación, encontrar solución para enfermedades como la depresión o el Alzheimer y "aumentar el conocimiento público de los beneficios de la investigación sobre el cerebro". En estos diez años la producción científica arroja un saldo de más de 250.000 trabajos sobre el cerebro y 25.000 sobre las emociones, con un beneficio en términos de
conocimiento que nadie discute.
"Ha sido un periodo de tremendos avances en la comprensión de la conducta, la emoción y la enfermedad mental. Hemos dado grandes pasos en nuestro conocimiento de las regiones cerebrales involucradas en la emoción, hemos empezado a comprender cómo los estados emocionales afectan al cuerpo y a la salud, y hemos desarrollado
nuevas tecnologías para visualizar el cerebro en pleno funcionamiento", resume Ned Kalin, director del Instituto de Investigación sobre Emociones y Salud de la Universidad de Wisconsin (EEUU).
